Belmond Andean Explorer: A luxury travel through the Peruvian Andes

Have you ever imagined touring the Peruvian Andes on a luxury train? To live this magical experience, embarked on an adventure through the main routes of Peru, will make you enjoy and observe the wonderful Andean flora and its majestic mountains.

It is South America’s first luxury train that combines genuine daytime getaways with sleeping accommodations at night, all while traversing the Peruvian Andes. Furthermore, it owns one of the highest rail routes in the world, as it surpasses the 4800m above sea level.

The Belmond Andean Explorer train will tour the three most important historical regions of Peru: Cusco, Puno (Titicaca Lake) and Arequipa, ancient pre-Columbian lands of great importance in the Inca times. Cities that are also considered to have the most beautiful landscapes in the world, that will connect passengers with a spectacular panorama.

Belmond Andean Explorer train design

The Belmond Andean Explorer has the capacity to transport 48 passengers with the finest cabin rooms with built-in bathrooms. Inspired by the Inca art, the train design was developed by the London designer Inge Moore. She used soft colors tint with grays, in order to create an atmosphere of rest and relaxation for the guests, who will enjoy every handmade fabric made with the finest alpaca fiber.

The train has different atmospheres like: lounge car, a place to enjoy a spectacular view towards the Andes, while delighting with some Peruvian drink to the sound of the piano; Observation car, the last place where you can enjoy the spectacular Andean landscape while enjoying a pisco sour outdoors and dining cars, a space where exquisite local dishes are served.

Gastronomy

The most exquisite Peruvian cuisine will be served on the Belmond Andean Explorer train. Here the guest will taste the most fresh and colorful dishes of the season, each one made with Andean ingredients.

Travelers can not start the day without an exquisite breakfast, while admiring the beauty of Peruvian natural landscapes, as well as receiving daily lunch and dinner. Remember that the chefs of the Belmond Hotel Monasterio are in charge of the production of every single menu.

Cabins

The traveler will find four types of fine finish cabins; the same that offer large beds, with their own bathroom and shower, also, the passenger will feel the comfort and privacy of the atmosphere, enjoying the tranquility of his personal sanctuary.

Cabin types are: Deluxe double bed cabin, junior double bed cabin, twin bed cabin and bunk bed cabin.

Know the itineraries to travel the Peruvian Andes

Peruvian Highlands

(Cusco – Lake Titicaca – City of Arequipa) 2 nights / 3 days

With a morning departure from Cusco, the capital of the ancient Inca Empire, you will cross the Altiplano towards Puno, and discover the spectacular beauty of Lake Titicaca. Next visit the Sumbay Caves, home to the rock art of the first humans that lived in the Peruvian highlands, before reaching the volcanic “White City” of Arequipa.

Departures take place on Thursdays mornings from the Cusco Station to Puno. Continuing with the tour, lunch begins on board, and then Raqchi is visited. After 3:00 p.m. afternoon tea is given and at almost 5:00 p.m. you will enjoy the sunset at La Raya, then a cocktail, and finally the dinner and at the end of the day you will arrive at the Lake Titicaca Station.

The second day will be longer, you will start with a breakfast on board, and after that you will visit two important islands: Uros and Taquile. Then you will have lunch on the beach, accompanied by typical dances with demonstration of artisan work. Passenger will return again to the Lake Titicaca Station, afternoon tea begins, a cocktail and finally, the dinner on board.

The last and third day, starts with an early breakfast in Saracocha, then you will visit the caves of Sumbay. At Km 99 Station, some passengers may wish to get off the train and visit Colca (remember that this visit is not included in the train ticket). After that, you will have lunch on board. Before ending the whole trip, passengers will have a panoramic tour to the city of Arequipa. At the end of the tour, everyone will be transferred to the city’s airport.

Andean plains and Islands of Discovery

With an evening departure from the Baroque city of Arequipa, you will head towards Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Later on you will cross through deep valleys and high mountains, where camelids graze in the wide open plains of the Peruvian Altiplano.

The night departure takes place on Saturdays from Arequipa Station to Puno, then the cocktail begins with dinner on board. As soon as passengers arrive in Puno, they can rest on board in front of the imposing Lake Titicaca.

With a spectacular sunrise, the second day begins with an early breakfast, later we visit the islands: Uros and Taquile. The passenger will have lunch at the beach (private location), which will have typical dances and demonstration of handmade pieces. At the end of the show, passengers are taken to the Lake Titicaca Station for an afternoon tea. Then the train leaves for Cusco, where we start cocktail and dinner on board, until arriving at Marangoni Station.

The third and final day starts with a breakfast on board, departing from Marangoni station to Raqchi, to finish the tour at the Cusco Station.

Spirit of the water

(Cusco – Puno) 1 night / 1 day

With a morning departure from Cusco aboard the elegant cars of Belmond Andean Explorer, you will travel across the giant peaks and wide open spaces of the highest plains of the Andes, finally reaching Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Incas.

Departures are on Tuesday mornings from the station Cusco towards Puno. Lunch is served on board on our way to Raqchi. Then, afternoon tea begins and you can see the sunset at La Raya. By the end of the day a cocktail and dinner are served on board and you arrive at the Titicaca Station.

The second day, after sleeping on board, the passenger will enjoy sunrise in front of Lake Titicaca, accompanied by an exquisite breakfast on board. Then, you can visit the famous islands: Uros and Taquile (optional). Then you will have lunch on the beach, accompanied by typical dances with demonstration of handmade work. Passengers are taken to the Lake Titicaca Station, with transfer to the airport or trip extensions.

Spirit of the andes

(Puno – Cusco) 1 night / 1 day

Travel from Puno to Cusco along one of the most beautiful train routes in the world, across the highest plains of the Andes.

Departures on Wednesdays noon from Puno Station to Cusco. The passenger can enjoy lunch on board, while the train travels to La Raya. Then, the cocktail and an exquisite dinner on board are served to finish at Cusipata Station.

The second day will be shorter, we depart from the Cusipata Station with breakfast on board and the tour ends when you arrive in the city of Cusco.
