“A fascinating space, where local residents have become protagonists of the conservation of their heritage” – Leonardo Serrano Gutierrez, Director of the Mariposario

Machu Picchu, the millenary citadel in Cusco is impressive, and is surrounded by one of the most impressive ecosystems on the planet. The natural beauty of this environment has earned the title of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity. Its mountains host an infinity of flora and fauna species, among them, multicolored birds, mammals, orchids, bamboo forests and an extraordinary “collection” of more than 300 species of butterflies, many of which can not be seen anywhere else in the world.

Within the National Park of Machu Picchu, you can find the “Mariposario” or Butterfly House. This project seeks the balance between conservation and sustainable development, through research, training and education of the species.

The visit

The Butterfly House of Machu Picchu has different spaces that you can not miss during the visit. In the flight area you will find yourself surrounded by colored wings: The butterflies fly freely and visitors can interact with them as well as with plants and other elements of their habitat. You can observe the life cycle of the butterflies and, if you’re lucky, you’ll see some of them getting out of their cocoon! At all times visitors will be accompanied by specialists who will provide information about these incredible species.

Also, you can show your most adventurous side by participating in activities of one hour or a full day in the surroundings. The Butterfly House invites you to reforest, free butterflies, and other excursions that bring you closer to the biodiversity of this magical environment.

On the other hand, the Butterfly House of Machu Picchu has an interpretation center, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of discovering more species of butterflies. In the same way, it seeks to inform the relationship between these insects and the people’s lives.
