Wanchaq Station (Cusco)
to Puno Station:
10 hours 30 minutes
Wanchaq Station Km. 338/3,354 masl
UrcosKm. 285/3,121 masl
Km.59 — Urcos is, according to legend, the place where the local chieftains hid the Inca’s gold to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Spanish and their sacred objects being melted into vain jewelry.
LA RAYAKm. 285/3,121 masl
Km. 210 — La Raya, at 4,321 meters above sea level, is the highest point on this journey. It is a cold and remote place, where mist or a light rain tends to hide the snow-capped peaks, and whose silence is attributed to the dizzying heights that blocks the traveler’s eardrums. After crossing this enormous slope, the train travels across a sea of seemingly never-ending pastures and lost villages immune to the passage of time.
JULIACAKm. 304/Km. 0/3,825 mas
Km. 281 — The train travels through Juliaca, a commercial and railway hub with nearly 150,000 inhabitants, whose boisterous business sector sometimes seems to spill over onto the rails, over which the train continues on its way among merchants selling cloths and handicrafts.
