FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is PeruRail Cargo?

PeruRail Cargo is PeruRail’s business unit dedicated to rail and bimodal (truck + train) transportation of large volumes of mining and industrial freight in southern Peru. We have operated since 1999 with a robust, secure logistics network aligned with international standards.

What type of cargo does PeruRail Cargo transport?

We primarily transport:

  • Mineral concentrates (such as copper).
  • Industrial cargo.
  • Fuels and products from the hydrocarbons and petrochemicals sector.
  • Standardized cargo and special logistics projects.

Our operations are designed to handle large volumes with continuity and traceability.

What is the bimodal system (truck + train)?

The bimodal system integrates controlled road transport (truck) with rail transport. It allows us to serve mines and plants without direct rail access by moving cargo by truck to a transfer center, where it is loaded onto trains for rail transportation.

This model ensures efficiency, safety, and mine‑to‑port operational continuity.

Where does the truck‑to‑train transfer take place?

Transfers mainly take place at the Pillones Transfer Center, a key infrastructure asset for PeruRail Cargo.

Pillones enables:

  • Fast and safe cargo transfer.
  • Efficient operational scheduling.
  • Synchronization between road and rail segments.
  • Seamless integration of bimodal operations.
Which routes are part of the operational network?

Our rail network connects: Mollendo – Port of Matarani – Arequipa – Juliaca – Puno – Cusco

This corridor represents the strategic rail axis for mining and industrial cargo in southern Peru.

Do you offer direct access to the Port of Matarani?

Yes. The Port of Matarani (Arequipa) is the main export gateway for our operation.

We ensure mine or plant‑to‑port continuity, enabling an integrated and efficient logistics operation for foreign trade.

What logistics support infrastructure do you have?

PeruRail Cargo operates with:

  • Pillones and La Joya Transfer Centers.
  • Proprietary rail infrastructure and high‑capacity platforms.
  • Trucks for controlled road segments.
  • Specialized loading systems.
  • 240,000 m² of strategic storage capacity in Matarani, within the port area, for cargo consolidation, stockpiling, and synchronization with trains and port windows.
Does PeruRail Cargo offer storage services?

Yes. We provide strategic storage in Matarani focused on:

  • Cargo consolidation.
  • Operational support.
  • Logistics synchronization with rail and port operations.

We do not operate as an open commercial warehouse, but as part of integrated logistics solutions.

What volumes can PeruRail Cargo handle?

Our operation is designed for large volumes. For example:

  • 3.4 million tons per year of copper concentrate under rail and bimodal operations.
  • 5 million gallons per month of fuel transported to Juliaca and Cusco.

Actual volumes depend on each project and logistics configuration.

How does the mining loading process work?

In typical mining operations:

  1. Concentrate is loaded into specialized containers at the mine.
  2. It is transported by truck to the transfer center.
  3. Specialized cranes place the containers onto rail platforms.
  4. The cargo is transported by train to the Port of Matarani for export.

The entire process is designed to ensure cargo integrity and traceability.

Can you handle critical or daily continuity operations?

Yes. Our rail and bimodal network is designed for:

  • Stable, year‑round operations.
  • High‑demand and critical continuity schemes.
  • Low incident rates and effective risk control.
What certifications and standards do you comply with?

We operate under international standards:

  • ISO 9001 – Quality management.
  • ISO 14001 – Environmental management.
  • ISO 45001 – Occupational health and safety.
  • Compliance with internationally recognized FRA rail technical standards.
How is operational safety ensured?

We apply a prevention‑based safety culture including:

  • Strict HSE protocols.
  • Emergency plans and drills.
  • Procedures for spills and natural events.
  • Mandatory use of PPE.
  • Trained emergency response teams.

Safety is a core pillar of our operations.

How do you manage environmental impact?

Rail transportation reduces road congestion and exposure to incidents compared to fully road‑based schemes.
In addition, we develop sustainability programs that integrate:

  • Responsible environmental management.
  • Social programs with local communities.
  • Rail safety education and awareness.
Which companies already work with PeruRail Cargo?

We have developed logistics solutions for leading mining, industrial, and energy companies, including:

  • Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde.
  • Las Bambas.
  • Repsol.
  • Petroperú.
