Frequently Asked Questions

Where do trains to Machu Picchu depart from?

PeruRail trains to Machu Picchu depart from Ollantaytambo and Poroy in Cusco, arriving at Aguas Calientes Station, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. Travellers can also choose the bimodal Bus + Train service from Cusco, which includes a transfer at Pachar Station before continuing the journey by train to Machu Picchu.

How long is the train journey to Machu Picchu?

The train journey from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Poroy, Cusco, the journey takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes. The exact travel time may vary depending on the train service, departure station and selected schedule.

What is the difference between Expedition, Vistadome and Vistadome Observatory?

Expedition is PeruRail’s standard train service: comfortable, reliable and ideal for travellers looking for an efficient way to reach Machu Picchu. How far in advance should I book the train to Machu Picchu?

It is recommended to book your train to Machu Picchu at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance, especially during the high season from June to August and December to January. PeruRail also offers a Best Price Guarantee when booking directly through its official website.

Do I need an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu in addition to the train ticket?

Yes. The train ticket does not include entrance to the Machu Picchu archaeological site. Entrance tickets must be purchased separately through the official platform of the Ministry of Culture of Peru.
