Cusco, July 13, 2026
On July 7, commemorating the 19th anniversary of the declaration of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu as one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the District Municipality of Machupicchu held a session recognizing the contributions of individuals, companies, and institutions to the district’s development. In this context, Peru Belmond Hotels S.A. and PeruRail S.A. were recognized for their contributions and their ongoing commitment to the community.
The ceremony was presided over by the district mayor, Elvis La Torre, who also acknowledged the contribution of Peruvian director Diego Yamashiro and the Rescue Team of the Machu Picchu Llaqta and the network of Inca Trails and Machupicchu Pueblo.

Every year, the team at the Sanctuary Lodge hotel voluntarily collaborates with the cleaning and maintenance of the immediate surroundings of the Llaqta access. More recently, they have contributed to the beautification of the district’s gastronomic boulevard, where several local businesses offer their services. PeruRail, for its part, was honored for its uninterrupted collaboration for over 27 years in transporting more than 5,000 tons of solid waste annually, which constitutes an essential contribution to waste management in the district.

As part of the commemorative day, the Municipality also organized a civic parade with the participation of school delegations, public institutions, civil organizations, and local businesses. Employees from the Sanctuary Lodge hotel and PeruRail actively participated in this event, reaffirming their commitment to a community they have been a part of since 1999.
