Cusco, October 1, 2026
Townspeople and tourists attended the unveiling of this artistic piece that represents the biodiversity and the cultural richness of the district.
On the occasion of Machu Picchu’s 85th anniversary, PeruRail delivered to the district a mural exceeding 110 m² on the side of its ticket office, in Plaza Manco Cápac, as part of the municipal initiative “Machu Picchu: First Mural Town in Peru.” The mural was painted by the Peruvian artist and muralist Juan Carlos Chávez-Fernández, known as “Cake,” who has created various murals in Peru and other countries.
The mural has been designed to honor Machu Picchu, representing its biodiversity, landscapes, and the Inca architecture heritage that make it unique, along with the PeruRail train, present in the district for 27 years. The spectacled bear, the Andean cock-of-the-rock, the torrent duck, the queña, orchids, and the pisonay are some of the elements of flora and fauna that can be observed in the colorful mural, accompanied by the Urubamba River, snow-capped mountains, and cloud forests.
“The Machu Picchu District Municipality thanks PeruRail for having created this mural for the district’s 85th anniversary. Thanks to this work, all tourists passing through this area can enjoy these beautiful images. We also thank PeruRail for its solid waste management program, through which it permanently supports the Municipality,” mentioned Hector Olivera, deputy mayor of the district, who was in charge of the mural’s inauguration yesterday, September 30, along with Martín Bocángel, PeruRail representative.
With this mural, PeruRail greets Machu Picchu on its 85th anniversary and reaffirms its bond with the community, expressed daily through its trains and the social initiatives the company promotes in the district.
