How to get to Machu Picchu?

  1. Take a flight or bus from Lima. Both will leave you approximately 20 minutes from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco. Duration: Plane: 1hr 30min / Bus: 22hrs.
  2. Go to the train station of your choice from Plaza de Armas:
    San Pedro Station: 10min.
    Wánchaq Station: 10min.
    Poroy Station: 20min.
    Ollantaytambo Station: 1hr 30min (with more departure times and train services).
  3. Travel by train. In PeruRail we have the best train services and a variety of frequencies that will take you to the Machu Picchu Pueblo station (also known as Aguas Calientes). Duration: between 1hr 30min to 3hr 30min.
  4. Board the Consettur bus (authorized company) from Machu Picchu Pueblo to the entrance of the Inca Citadel. Duration: Consettur Bus: 30min. departures every 10min.
  5. Arrival to the Citadel or Llaqta Machu Picchu. We recommend you to buy your tickets at least 30 days before your trip.

Where can I purchase tickets to the Machu Picchu citadel?

The ticket for the Inca Citadel can be purchased by online clickling here or at the offices on Calle Maruri 340, City of Cusco and at Avenida Garcilaso S/N, City of Cusco.  Tickets are limited, the schedules and circuits are subject to availability.

What are the established circuits at Machu Picchu?

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

In the rainy season (November to March) temperatures are between 66°F and 70°F. In the dry season (April to October) between 63°F and 66°F. In June and July temperatures can drop to 28°F.  However, there are also sunny days during the rainy season, and you´ll be able to take great photos of the citadel. Click here for more information.

Can I get altitude sickness at Machu Picchu?

If I’m a foreigner, what type of power adaptor do I need for my visit to Peru?

Voltage in Peru is 220v. You will need an adaptor if the voltage in your country is 110v. The most common outlets are Type A, Type B and Type C.

Are all payment options accepted in the area?

For meals and shopping in Machu Picchu Pueblo, it will depend on the establishment, since the smaller local and family businesses tend to only accept cash. 

Are Machu Picchu, Llaqta and Machu Picchu Pueblo the same place?

Machu Picchu is the name of the mountain where the Inca citadel stands. Llaqta means “citadel” in Quechua and is the term used when referring to the Machu Picchu citadel.  Meanwhile, Machu Picchu Pueblo, once known as Aguas Calientes, is the official name of the town where Machu Picchu is located.

What should I take on my visit to Machu Picchu?

Sunblock is recommended, insect repellent, a windbreaker, your identity document (passport or national identity card) and your physical or digital entrance ticket.

Will I see llamas at Machu Picchu?

Yes.  The llamas in the Machu Picchu citadel walk about freely all yearround.

Are there restrooms/toilets at Machu Picchu citadel?

No. However there are toilet facilities at the entrance to the citadel, at extra cost.
