International Women’s Day

An homage to the Andean women who weave stories that travel to Machu Picchu

International Women’s Day: a celebration that transcends borders

Across the world, 8 March is a day to honour the strength, creativity, and resilience of women. In the Andes, this celebration takes on a unique meaning. At PeruRail, we highlight the artistry of the women from Cusco’s communities, who preserve ancestral weaving techniques and carry their heritage onto our trains bound for Machu Picchu, inspiring travellers from every corner of the globe.

Warmi Away Programme: the art that empowers

Warmi Away is one of PeruRail’s most meaningful social initiatives, created to strengthen the skills of women artisans from communities in Cusco. Through traditional loom weaving and natural dyeing techniques using local roots and leaves, participants embrace and preserve their cultural legacy.

The programme was born in 2015 in the community of Pachar, where 19 women completed their training and became formal suppliers of the textiles that now adorn our Vistadome and Vistadome Observatory trains.

Their work not only safeguards ancestral knowledge – it also opens new opportunities for growth, income, and autonomy for each artisan.

From loom to train: a journey carrying living culture

Every textile displayed aboard the Vistadome and Vistadome Observatory is more than decoration, it is a story woven with tradition, identity, and cultural pride.
