07:40 hours – PeruRail S.A. reports that from 01:40 am and throughout the early morning, passengers were evacuated from Machu Picchu station to Ollantaytambo, transporting 2,000 passengers. Of these, 700 were local train passengers and 1,300 were tourist train passengers.
Tourist train operations from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu have resumed with delays of approximately one hour due to the evacuation operation, but it is estimated that they will return to normal during the course of the day.
Tourists arriving at Machu Picchu late due to this emergency will be able to enter and visit the Llaqta even if their entry time has passed, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture.
Perurail thanks all its workers, the local authorities, the national government, the population and the tourists for their understanding and support at this difficult time for everyone. We will continue to provide updates in the coming hours.
Sincerely,
